The New York Times >India takes....a Sikh?: "Manmohan Singh, the gentlemanly Oxford-educated economist who saved India from economic collapse in 1991 and began the liberalization of its economy, has been appointed the country's next prime minister, ending a week of high political drama. "

Markets seem to like this decision. It also signals that India seems to moving away from some of the past cultural biases that have hampered them in the past. Recent PM's have included those from lower castes, foriegn heritage and now a Sikh.

From personal experience there the Sikh's seemed to occupy the lowest rung on the totem pole when it came to three guys in a boat (or walk into a bar) jokes. These jokes exist in every culture and usually indicate social pecking order.
