Washington State gets a little nasty...

George Nethercutt has been running an ad in Washington state that is somewhat devastating, where Patty Murray says some complimentary things about Osama Bin Laden.

Yes that's right Osama Bin Laden.

The problem is that her statements, in the correct context are probably right.

In Indiana in 2002 Chris Chocola ran and ad against Jill Long Thompson where she said that she did not even read most of the bills she voted on.

Once again, for a midwesterner, these are not the right things to say. The problem again, is that it is mostly true. Chris Chocola, who went on to win the election for Congress, did not read the entir budget he voted on this year nor most of the bills he voted on...the key is never to say it, at least near anyone with a video camera.

I do not know what the effect will be of the Nethercutt ad. I think he was about 12 down in the most recent poll. But I think the lesson to be learned is this:

"To succeed in Washington, never lie to the people. But if your only alternative to lying is telling the truth, it's probably better to tell the lie."
